My stack of books to read and review keeps growing every larger. Of course it's not as bad as the picture on the right - yet, but if I add my two book shelves loaded with books to read, the 200 or so books on my ereaders, and the 16 + counting novels I have to review, I'd say I'm pretty close.
What is driving my obsession? Why can't I seem to aquire enough books? I suppose the answer is because I'm obsessed with the written word. Everytime I open a book a small thrill runs down my spine, for I know Iwill soon discover some new world or a fascinating character. A book allows me to travel the world and meet new people every day.
What is truly feeding my obsession however is the ease with which I can now purchase an ebook. It literally takes me no more than one second to have a new novel added to my Kindle. To tempt me even more, many of today's top name authors are self-publishing their earlier releases at terrifically affordable prices. Most of the books on my Kindle have been purchased at no cost or for less than $3 or in rare cases, for less than $10. For Canadians like me, that beats current book prices that now average about $16 to $20 or more for hardcopy releases. Unaffordable for the kind of reading pace I keep.
Yeah, I've heard people say that they still prefer the feel of a real book in their hands. But I believe it's only they haven't made the jump to ebooks fully. Slowly, society is changing, and the newer generations are being raised with electronics and computers at their fingertips.
Ebooks are booming. So for now, I love my ereaders and I love feeding my obsession. Now if only I can learn to read a little faster.

Oh but wouldn't it be splendid to have a library like the picture on the right?! I am still a real book person, but I do buy the discounted ebooks as well. They come in handy when traveling and I love having a back up copy to take with me on the run. Being obsessed with books is a condition I don't think I'll ever be cured of... not that I want to be :)
I enjoy my eReader, but I would rather read a book in its natural form. I refuse to actually buy an eBook! Call me cheap, but I can't see parting $$ for something that is not tangible. (Then again, I am more of a tactile person.) All of my eBooks are free or digital ARCs. I recently read a non-fiction on my eReader, and I'll try never to do that again. I prefer to note, go back and reference, which is difficult on the reader.
BTW, I have a Kobo. I really DO enjoy it, but I'm not all sold out on technology. I know the younger generations who are strictly technology-based will embrace them.
Great post. I know just how you feel. I've always preferred the written word to the spoken word. And I have no sales resistance either when it comes to buying books, especially free ebooks.
Great post Mirella with which I empathise completely, having been obsessed with book since I was a little girl.
